News: ESPN & Starz Launches on Android TV

While virtually ignored by the majority of countries around the world, Google’s surprisingly excellent connected-TV platform Android TV is rather well supported by our American friends, with this trend continuing further as ESPN and Starz find their way onto selected Android TV devices.

First up, American sports fans will be extremely pleased to find the ESPN app downloadable from the Google Play store, with WatchESPN’s live and on-demand content available now for Sony HDR Ultra HD TVs, Sharp Aquos Android TV, Nexus Player, Nvidia Shield and Razer Forge TV devices.

Unfortunately, Philips and RCA owners will have to wait for an additional rollout in the future, but we shouldn’t be surprised to find fragmentation discussed so soon into an article concerning anything regarding Android.

If your device is supported, before you get too excited, this is not an OTT service by ESPN, so you can’t subscribe to this without an old school cable TV subscription.

Starz on the other hand aren’t so last century, with both a cable TV login, or their fully OTT, contract-free, Internet version for $9 per month on offer.

However, the makers of Ash vs. Evil Dead and Outlander are leaning even more towards fragmentation, with only Nexus Players and Sony TVs currently supported.
